Universal Contour Wrap gets big break at the Emmys

NewsLeader | Company gets big break at Emmys
Spa products supplier to give detox wraps to the stars

A local spa supplier will be giving the star treatment to real stars as part of the lead-up to the Emmy Awards this weekend. That won't be a problem for Burnaby's Body Beautiful Canada, the only Canadian company to participate in the Sept. 18-19 pre-Emmy gifting event for the Hollywood elite.

"They'll be treated exactly the same as every other client," said company owner Helen Hodgson, 45. At a spa, "everyone should be treated like a celebrity". About 50 stars have been booked for a Universal Contour Wrap, a detoxification treatment that involves a person being wrapped in about 30 stretchy bandages soaked in warm sea clay.

While they lay on the treatment table for an hour, they'll also receive an organic facial. The wrap is guaranteed to firm the body and cause a loss of at least six inches (21 points all over the body are measured before and after) that will stay off for 30 days, provided the client doesn't gain weight.

Hodgson believes her company was chosen because of the uniqueness of the wrap, the fact it involves a detoxification process (removal of caffeine, nicotine, alcohol and the like) and because of a concerted effort in the past year to boost the company's profile through a public relations company.

It's all a far cry from Hodgson's life eight years ago, when she was the owner of five spas in the York region of England. In 2000 she came to Canada as a tourist and, seeing that the spa industry here was about 10 years behind Europe, jumped at the opportunity.

"So my little business lightbulb went 'ping' and I went home and decided to move to Canada”. Her husband at the time thought she was crazy and going through a mid-life crisis and refused to come along, ending the marriage. She and her daughter, now 16, forged ahead and moved to Kingston, Ont. For its large British community and the fact it was the same size as York.

"It exploded, it went crazy." Soon, people were driving three hours from Toronto, as well as from Ottawa and the U.S. to partake of the spa treatments. She set up a distribution agreement with Totally U.K., the manufacturer of the spa equipment she was using and is now the North American supplier.

After meeting her second husband, a Vancouver resident, she sold the spa, and moved here in 2003. She initially ran the distribution company out of her home then opened a storefront in Burnaby where it not only
sells the products but trains spa staff to use them.

In the last two years, Body Beautiful Canada has reached $1 million in sales. The publicity from the Emmy event will only push that number higher. The company will be allowed to publicize who received the wrap
treatment and publish photos of the stars, likely taken afterwards. The only condition is they're not allowed to publish the stars' •measurements.

"This is a coup. I definitely got brownie points for this one." When Hodgson informed staff at Totally U.K. of the event, "there was a lot of screaming. There was a lot of fighting for who was going. 1got e-mails from 12
volunteers."

While she'll be sending four staff to perform the treatments, one Burnaby sales manager from the U.K., she won't be going herself. A mother of an 18-monthold boy, she's staying home. "I can't leave my baby. I love my business with a passion, but family comes first."

After a brief pause, she leaned forward, clenched hand to her ear, and said laughing, "I'm going to be on the phone every 10 minutes, who am I kidding?"

Universal Contour Wrap Review | L.A. Splash Magazine

It’s after Thanksgiving and you’re afraid to stand on the scale because you couldn’t decide whether to have turkey or ham. But so much more decisions to make: an assortment of appetizers, sweet potatoes, yams, creamy mashed potatoes, roasted garlic, potatoes, string bean casserole and three different types of stuffing. You put so much on your plate, you needed sideboards. And to make this plate a masterpiece, you drizzle it with gravy and add a few rolls. Oh no! What about dessert? Pumpkin pie, apple pie, cherry pie, lemon meringue, bread pudding, etc. Then you wash it down with your favorite beverage.

The next day you wake up thinking you had a nightmare, but it was all true. You couldn’t decide what to eat so you went ahead and tried it all. Now you can’t zip up your pants. Everything is tight except your favorite sweat pants--what a relief. Even worse, you can’t fit in that cute dress for the upcoming holiday party.

You can go to the library and find diet books from (A-Z): the Atkins Diet to the Zone diet. However, if you’re looking to lose inches quickly, another weight loss system is the Universal Contourwrap. Specially trained therapist wrap your body with up to thirty elasticized bandages (takes 45 minutes) the bandages are pre-soaked in a unique warm mineral-rich clay solution discovered by Dr. Richard Strem, after extensive research into beneficial minerals used in spa treatments. The bandages sculpt and tone your body for one hour while the minerals are absorbed into your skin and the clay draws out toxins.

Pros of Universal Contourwrap:

  • You are guaranteed to lose 6 inches in two hours and last for 30 days
If you don’t lose at least 6 inches, you won’t be charged
You should maintain a loss of at least 6 inches for a period of 30 days or you will
be wrapped again free of charge (provided you don’t gain weight)
You don’t have to go to a gym
    You don’t have to diet
Your skin is soft and smooth
You feel as though you had a full body massage
You may feel re-charged to begin a better health program
Your body is more toned and tightened
    The clay draws out toxins
The clay solution continues to detoxify and tighten your body for up to four days
as long as you follow “After Wrap Instructions”
    Partial body wraps are available
Drinking plenty of water after treatments may help continue the inch loss, detox
    and cleansing process.

Cons of Universal Contourwrap:

  • The inches will increase if you gain weight
    You may feel claustrophobic
The guarantee is good provided you don’t put on weight
Partial wraps are not offered a guarantee
Avoid soap for five days (except for the underarms and groin area)
    Avoid cream/lotions for five days
Avoid hot showers for five days
Avoid tea, coffee, sugar, salt, carbonated drinks, alcohol and fried and fatty foods
    for five days.

Salon vs. DIY | Beauty Confidential "The Body Shrinking Wrap"

SALON TREATMENT: Universal Contour Wrap, from £55 per treatment (call 0845 094 9460 for
salons).

TESTER: Joan Shaw, 25, Birmingham.

AFTER having my vital statistics measured, I was wrapped in clay-soaked bandages before lying down for an hour.

The treatment comes with two guarantees — if you don’t lose 6in and keep them off for 30 days, you don’t pay (this doesn’t apply if you put on weight naturally afterwards!)

Once the bandages were off, I noticed my skin felt really soft and smooth. I was then remeasured and I’d lost 7in all over and my clothes didn’t feel so tight. I managed to keep those inches off for the next month and I would definitely have another treatment. 8/10.

Wrapping up her business | Stars come out for Burnaby woman's spa treatment, pre-Oscars (Burnaby Now)

Mia Thomas | Burnaby Now

When Oscar came calling, Helen Hodgson didn't hesitate. The Burnaby business owner took her universal contour wrap to Hollywood last month, taking part in a gifting suite at the SLS Hotel in Beverly Hills in the three days before the 81st annual Academy Awards ceremony. Hodgson owns Body Beautiful Canada, which has exclusive North American distribution rights to the wrap, promising to drop inches from those who use it.

In the runup to Hollywood's biggest night, singer and American Idol judge Paula Abdul; actress Erin Cummings, who has had roles in a number of TV shows, including Dollhouse; and Rebecca Alleway, who was nominated for an Oscar for Best Art Direction for her work in The Duchess, all had wraps done.

Hodgson, who immigrated to Canada from England, was excited and optimistic before heading to Los Angeles about what the Oscars could mean for her business. "It's an unbelievable opportunity for us to be able to get the awareness of the product out there," Hodgson said before her trip to Los Angeles, noting exposure to celebrities and others with influence in the fashion and beauty business would be "invaluable" for any business.

"It's going to be an unbelievable boost for us. ... It's going to catapult us in the U.S.
market into a prime position." And, Hodgson noted, it makes a change for most products, going from Canada to the United States.

"It's an amazing opportunity now for us to start from the north going south." Of course, the wrap had come north first - it had been developed by an American chiropractor, but no one in that country really made an effort to market it, said Hodgson. She had initially made the decision to move to Canada after seeing the state of her own industry here while on holiday.

A spa treatment in Canada at the time meant manicures, pedicures, facials and massages. Meanwhile, spas in Europe were using technology to develop a variety of beauty treatments, including wraps and ultrasound, lymphatic massage and electronic muscle stimulator technology.

"I recognized what an opportunity there was with the spa industry here because the technology was so far behind Europe," said Hodgson. "All these things that nobody here had ever heard of, so my little business lightbulb went 'Ping!' and I thought if I could bring all these technologies here and establish a spa, I'm going to be immediately busy."

She initially moved to Toronto and set up a spa. "It went amazingly," Hodgson said of that initial venture, which preceded her move to the West Coast. She was familiar with the universal contour wrap from her work in the United Kingdom and got the North American rights in 2006.

"The equipment technology is superb," she said, adding it's also relaxing. "A little bit of escapism is a welcome change for our clients." The procedure involves the signature clay mixture and specialized wrapping techniques.

In September, Body Beautiful Canada was invited to provide the universal contour wrap at the Emmys, a chance to promote the product in the spa industry. "It was amazing, the reception we received because we were normal, we ate cookies," Hodgson said of that experience.

From there, it was just a step to the biggest event in the North American entertainment
calendar. "As a direct result of the buzz that we created in Los Angeles at the Emmys, they invited us
to go to the Oscars," said Hodgson. According to Body Beautiful's publicity company, Paris Hilton's and Janet Jackson's personal assistants were checking out the suite, and the company is making arrangements to fly down to Los Angeles to wrap Hilton and Jackson in their own homes.

For those celebrities who miss out on their wrap in the days leading up to the Oscars, they will no longer have to come all the way to Canada: Hodgson reports the wrap is now also offered at the Ole Henriksen Face/Body spa, at its locations on Sunset Boulevard and in Santa Monica.

Adrien Brody, Tom Arnold, Joey Fatone, Deirdre Hall and Mimi Rogers were among those who picked up information about the wraps, had photos taken and got gift certificates to have the wrap done at the local spa.

Detox and come down a dress size without the gym (Metro)

Cut bridal stress and inches at the spa

DEANA LANCASTER

Forget crash diets and gym memberships. Busy brides-to-be can lose those last few inches before their wedding day from the comfort of a spa.

Tori Holmes, a trainer for spa distributing company Body Beautiful Canada, said a spa treatment should be part of every bride’s budget. She described two timesaving treatments that Vancouver brides have discovered to reduce stress and waistlines. The eurowave slimming and toning machine stimulates and tightens your muscles and is guaranteed to drop you down a whole dress size.

“What you’d be doing (for months) in the gym you’re doing in three to four weeks in a spa,” she said. “If you’re getting married in two weeks the universal contour body wrap is a great alternative. It’s like a tummy tuck and a bum lift without surgery.”

“Because you’re de-toxing it’s like you’re letting go. And isn’t that what marriage is? You’re starting something new … and you’re at your optimum.”

North Shore News “It’s a wrap”

Before she hosted the Oscars last year, Ellen Degeneres had a body wrap live on her show. Though it was a funny segment — complete with her emerging from her shower looking like a mummy — many celebrities use the treatment before a big event. It’s said to tighten the skin, eliminate toxins, and reduce inches.

I had to try it. “They’re very popular,” says a local spa owner. Clients prepping for their wedding day, graduation or other big events will often undergo a series of wraps, said to give the best results. It wasn’t the most luxurious of spa treatments. As I stood naked, save for a pair of paper panties, therapist Dolena Thompson took 18 different measurements from various areas around my body: jawline, neckline, upper chest, under bust, waist, abdomen, buttocks, hips, thighs, knee, calf, thigh, forearm and wrist. Then she wrapped me tightly from ankle to neck in warm elastic bandages pre-soaked in a mineral salt and clay solution.

“It’s all about the way you wrap it,” said Thompson, who had to attend training courses to be certifi ed at performing the Universal wrap. The treatment was developed by U.S. doctor Richard Strem after extensive research into minerals used in spa treatments. According to the website, it is the clay in the solution that “draws out toxins” and results in inch loss.

I am always skeptical of such claims, but I love to play guinea pig, so once wrapped I let Thompson help me into a rubber suit, lumber up onto a bed and cover me in blankets to sweat out all the impurities.

This was the best part of the treatment: I nibbled tasty ginger cookies and sipped tea, read a trashy magazine, and dozed a bit before Thompson returned to unwrap me. As she unwound the soggy bandages, Thompson was careful to warm me up and attempted to keep me covered as she again took all the measurements.

Though the treatment guarantees you will lose a minimum of six inches, I wasn’t expecting to see any difference. But indeed, that was exactly how much smaller I was: a few inches here and there were reduced from my legs, hips and belly. Results would have been even more significant, said Thompson, had I booked a course of three wraps.

In order to maintain the results I was told to avoid hot showers for a few days (so that the clay in my skin could continue to work), drink plenty of water, and avoid tea, coffee, sugar, salt, carbonated drinks, alcohol, and fried and fatty foods. It seems to me that if you avoided those last five items you wouldn’t need a body wrap in the first place . . .

Nonetheless, despite my skepticism, I had to admit that my jiggly bits seemed slightly less so; and that the waistband on my pants was a bit looser. It’s clear that the body wrap is no substitute for exercise and diet when it comes to losing weight and inches. But for a kick-off to a new fitness plan, it’s not bad. And if you’re angling to squeeze into that hot dress for a big event or a bikini before your vacation, it might be just the ticket.

West Ender covers the Universal Contour Wrap

Unless you’re a supermodel like Heidi Klum, you — like most women — dread bikini season. With summer in full swing, we all want to tone the winter flab and go from beach blob to beach babe. But how can that be achieved when it’s already mid-July and no real work has been done to reach that lofty goal?

With the unwelcome rise of the amateur camera-phone paparazzi, the whole world’s feeling a bit like a stage, and none of us are too keen to have our flabby tummy showing up on a random website alongside various snarky comments. That’s not how any of us envision our 15 minutes of fame.

I wanted to eliminate my muffin top as quickly and as painlessly as possible, so I could flaunt my two-piece Pucci — the one that’s sitting patiently in my closet, brand new, with the tags still firmly affixed. So, I researched some alternatives to get my body bikini-ready — without all the tedious workouts — to see if they were really worth the time and expense.

UNIVERSAL CONTOUR WRAP

We’ve all heard of body-slimming wraps, but do they actually work? I’ve tried a few in my day and, honestly, I never saw a difference. But when I read that the Universal Contour Wrap guaranteed to take six inches off after one treatment, I decided to try it out. It works by wrapping the body in bandages that have been soaked in warm, mineral-rich sea clay; it claims to drain the toxins out of the body, leaving it svelte and sculpted.

Stripped down to nothing — barring flimsy disposable underwear — my body was measured by Catrina Maunder, head esthetician at Trinity Salon & Spa, so I could have an exact number of inches stripped away.

“You’re not losing fat; you’re losing inches,” explained Maunder as she wrapped my body up in soggy bandages. “The clay and bandages will help to lift and tone. It takes out the toxins from the fatty tissues, but leaves in the water content, so you’re still hydrated. It’s actually really good for you. Most body wraps take out the toxins and the water, so you’re left without the toxins, but also dehydrated.”

Covered from chin to toe in the bandages, I looked like a severe-burn victim, and felt like I had just put on a Spanx unitard. Catrina helped me into what looked like a silver space suit, spa mittens and booties, to keep the heat in as my body sweated out the toxins and absorbed the clay. I waddled back to the bed and lay there for an hour. Halfway through, I was treated to a mini-facial and a mind-melting scalp massage.

When the bandages came off, I couldn’t help but stare at my new, more toned mid-section — I did see an overall improvement. As Catrina took my measurements, she let me know that my bum had definitely lifted and the overall result was that I had lost an astounding 9.1 inches off my entire body!

“Drink plenty of water so your body can continue to lose inches and detoxify,” said Catrina as I left the spa. “The clay is still in your pores, and the process can continue for a few more days after you leave.” She also advised me that if I stayed away from tea, coffee, sugar, salt, carbonated drinks, alcohol, and fried and fatty foods, and drank loads of water, I could keep the inches off for up to a month.

It’s been over a week now, and I’ve still managed to stay svelte. If losing inches is as easy as a wrap and a facial, bring it on!

That’s a wrap –

“Ground control to Major Tom.” David Bowie’s song lyrics floated through my cranium as I stared in the mirror. To be sure, the reflection was more of a man on a space mission than someone who’d just been body-wrapped.

The baggy silver getup is designed to keep the body temperature normal after getting the Universal Contour Wrap, which has become hugely popular at the spa in recent months. Reason is, the wrap guarantees the loss of at least six inches from the bod. That’s INCH loss, not weight loss, and the reduction could be from anywhere — the ankles, the wrists, abdomen, butt. My first choice: the gut, but no promises.

The UCW, as I experienced, is a figure-firming treatment that leaves the skin feeling soft and healthier. But oh, those elasticized bandages! Thirty of them are soaked in some kind of warm, brown mineral/clay water (shhh, it’s proprietary) and then wrapped around the body — head to ankle. The only parts not covered are the feet, hands and face. It’s a tight fit, but kind of comforting, too, as I lie on the table, once fully wrapped, for a Cellcosmet collagen facial and hand massage in the capable care of Tove Berg, the attendant.

“Some people have trouble with the tightness,” she told me. “It can feel a little bit claustrophobic.”

The fee is $259 for a single Universal Contour Wrap session. Several of the spa’s clients come back every week to get the UCW, says Berg, who is trained as a massage therapist. “But now,” she reports, “most of my time is doing these wraps. That’s how popular they are.”

The majority of clients are brides and people with immediate plans for a beach vacation, she added. I was Berg’s first male client for the UCW, which was developed by Dr. Richard Strem as a way to purge toxins from the body’s fatty tissues.

It’s been a big hit in the U.K. — 1,500 spa locations and counting — and was introduced to Canada by the likes of Body Beautiful Canada, a Burnaby-based distributor of spa
treatments. The UCW is now available at 24 locations in B.C., including Som Visao Spa.

The promise is that the wrap tones the skin in a way that can’t be achieved through exercise and diet alone. With summer here, it could serve as a great kick-start for the bathing-suit season. “The wrap is a great motivator for clients,” says Body Beautiful boss Helen Hodgson, “and often inspires them to continue eating more healthily.”

For me, that wasn’t the case. In the days following my wrap, I didn’t feel thinner or find my clothes to be looser fitting, but my skin did feel incredibly soft. At the start of my two-hour session, I stripped down to a pair of disposable briefs to allow Berg to take detailed measurements of my body, from jawline to ankle and 16 points between.

And then for the wrapping, which took about 20 minutes. It’s done with a specific technique, not haphazardly. After that, it was onto the table for an hour for Berg’s massage and soothing sounds of “spa” music. I drifted to sleep for a bit — on company time. Did I mention that I love my job? Anyhow, once Berg said so in a quiet voice, I eased my body off the table, exited the silver suit and had her remove the bandages for another full-body measurement.

That done, the numbers were crunched. The majority of my inch loss was from the butt — a hair more than a half inch. The bust area was also a big loser and, strangely, the wrist. The waist and abdomen? Not so much, sadly. My total loss: 9.25 inches. “That’s about average,” explained Berg. “Some people lose 12 or 13 inches with one treatment.”

She wrote the calculations on a take-home cardboard sheet, which also detailed post-wrap care. My instructions were to drink lots of water, shower with as little soap as possible to enhance the effectiveness of the clay solution, and avoid creams and lotions for a few days.

Also to be avoided are tea, coffee, sugar, salt, carbonated drinks, alcohol and fried/fatty foods. Indeed, I did — for the first night.

Drinking lots of water is key. The UCW doesn’t rely on dehydration to achieve inch loss; the water intake continues the detox process and can help people lose more inches after they’ve left the spa. I’m not sure about that, as I didn’t measure myself once I left the spa for the day.

If nothing else, it was a really cool way to play Major Tom for a couple hours.

Savvy Mom.ca features Universal Contour Wrap

Don’t get a mother started about her post-baby body. We’ve got a name for (and a complaint for) every weathered and worn bit: chicken arms, saddle bags, chin waddles, love handles, mummy tummies, muffin tops, arm pit swag and more… But what if we told you that we’ve got a guaranteed solution to improve these much-loved mommy parts?

Several years ago, Burnaby-based Body Beautiful Canada introduced the Universal Contour Wrap, affectionately known as the UCW, to spas in North America and, since then, it’s been helping to firm and tone mothers’ skin everywhere. The UCW promises to take six inches off, regardless of your size and shape, in just one wrap treatment or it’s free (treatments run about $175). We’re not suggesting that you retire the sneakers, but the average loss is 10 to 14 inches from just one treatment (and we’ve still got the clay between our toes to prove it). This six inch loss is guaranteed to stay off for at least 30 days, or you will be re-wrapped for free. With claims like these, it is no wonder that the UCWis a red carpet secret (just ask Paula
and Paris).

So, what’s the skinny on this wrap? The UCW is a detoxification treatment that involves a person being wrapped in about 30 tensor bandages soaked in a special warm sea clay concoction from head to toe. But before you are wrapped, 21 points all over your body are measured (yes, completely naked) and you also get weighed. Sound fun yet? While you relax mummified for one hour, the UCW removes toxins (like caffeine, nicotine, and alcohol) from your body by causing a purge of these pollutants, which accumulate in your fatty tissue, through your lymphatic system. When you are unwrapped, you are re-measured to show how much your fatty tissue has been compacted, and you are weighed to prove that you have lost nothing in water weight. While the result isn’t stark, your clothes will feel looser.

More than 30 spas in the Greater Vancouver area are now certified to perform the UCW. The UCW is also available online from Body Beautiful Canada as a home care kit. The kit is designed for “touch ups” or for those wanna-wrappees who do not have a certified spa nearby. There aren’t many guarantees in life. With the UCW, you’ve got both everything and nothing to lose. Sheila C. (10.2 inches lost), North Vancouver.
